Airbnb Boosts Japan Economy by JPY 920 billion

Today, Airbnb announced that the Airbnb community generated JPY 920 billion in economic impact in Japan in 2016, based on internal data and a survey of hosts and guests conducted in January 2017.

Key findings in Japan:

  • In 2016, the Airbnb community generated JPY 406.1 billion in economic activity and an estimated economic impact of JPY 920 billion in Japan.
  • There were over 3,700,000 inbound guest arrivals at Airbnb listings in 2016.
  • In 2016, the typical host in Japan earned JPY1,004,830 from hosting on Airbnb.
  • The typical listing was rented for 89 nights in 2016.
  • The active number of hosts was 22,400 in 2016.
  • “Japan is one of our most popular markets, and we continue to grow across the country because people increasingly want unique, authentic and adventurous experiences when they travel,” said Mika Yamamoto, public policy manager, Airbnb Japan. “More than 3.7 million guests travelled to Japan using Airbnb in 2016. Guests visited all 47 prefectures, helping to distribute tourism spend to local businesses and revitalize regions that do not traditionally benefit from tourism.”

    Economic Impact for Hosts and the city of Japan
    In 2016, the Airbnb community generated JPY 920 billion in economic impact in Japan, an 80% increase from JPY 520.7 billion 2015.

    Growing inbound tourism
    In 2016, there were over 3,700,000 inbound guest arrivals at Airbnb listings in Japan, a 180% increase from 2015. The average length of stay per guest was 3.4 days.

    Geography and frequency of hosting in Japan
    With an increase of Airbnb listings, Airbnb has provided guests with the opportunity to visit areas other than sightseeing spots and they can stay in neighborhoods that haven’t typically benefitted from tourism in the past. Airbnb signed a MoU with Kamaishi City, Iwate Prefecture in October 2016. Next month guests will be able to stay at Airbnb listings in Kamaishi city.
